“The Cultural Limits of Play and the Serious”

In reading these articles i have learned more about the underlying ideological meaning that lies behind games and a more clear understanding of some of the ins and outs of game studies. The reading that stuck out to me the most id have to say is Caillois- “The Definition of Play”. I enjoyed this reading the most because he has made it clear that his work is more than just the study of games but more importantly the creative quality of the play principle in the domain of culture. Perhaps a different type of reality within the universe we already live in.

I love the idea of “play” being defined as “free”. I feel like free means an enjoyment, an amusement, even an outlet of some sort for players, something that is not forced, but voluntary, a form of mediation. I feel as if this is more an appreciation of play, because there are a lot of characteristics that feed off of play such as uncertainty, separation, competition etc. that can effect ones outlook on the universe. When players actually have the desire to play, and actually play to find a sense of deflection it allows play to become that escape from responsibilities and routines that you may be use to.

I agree that “play” is all in all a separation occupation, that in most terms is separated from the reality of real life, where there are limits on time and place. I find it interesting that during that particular time, in that particular space the detailed laws of your regular life seem as if they are being replaced in this fixed time and space by precise rules that must be followed to correctly play the game. What I love most about this concept the most is that even if the rules are violated, he still pretends to respect them. As we may know, this is not always the energy reciprocated in the real world. With that being said what I have learned most from this reading is the advantage of placing diversity in relief and enlarging meaningfully the universe ordinarily when games are studied.
