In the article “The Play Paradigm: What Media Studies Can Learn from Game Studies”, Friedman discusses the similarities in Games studies and Media studies. He discredits the main argument, that play is interactive and media is passive, by dissecting the ideas of what is play and what is media. Friedman focuses mostly on narrative media. He suggest that narrative media can be viewed as a form of play. Friedman breaks down each layer of play and how it correlates to media. He defines each aspect of the play paradigm and relates it to media.

Game Studies 
Friedman’s focus is rather interesting when comparing it to how Caillois defines play. When you analyze how play is actually defined, it becomes easier to determine whether or not you agree with Friedman and his opinion on how narrative media is considered play. In my personal opinion, I can understand how Friedman correlates play and media. While narrative media is interactive and consists of the same elements of play; I cannot say that I completely agree that narrative media and play are the same. In completing this reading, I found more confusion upon how I felt towards the concept of play and what all facets of the media apply to it.
