Caillois #PLAY #Definition

League of Legend character Miss Fortune

I hadn’t thought much about the word “Play” before I read Caillois’ “The Definition of Play”. The word “Play” was a word that could bring me happiness and sadness at the same time. Because I was happier and more excited than anyone else when I played. As a child, I always played with my friends, and the joy of playing with my friends always doubled and tripled and came back to me. However, I also had sad memories of playing too hard and getting scolded by my mom for ruining the important exam. Also, playing was just a simple daily routine and a small happiness for me.

However, the author’s writing was explaining the meaning and structure of play very well, so through his writing I could understand the detailed definition of “play”. I’ve been crazy about a game called ‘League of Legend’ these days. League of Legend was the most perfect and outstanding game example of what Caillois described the definition of “play”. I was so exciting to compare League of Legend and Caillois’ definition of play.

First, the game League of Legend has Freedom. In every game, each player is free to choose their own game settings and character’s item. Second, although there is no exact game time in the game, one game usually ends in 15 to 50 minutes. The most important and fun part of the game is the uncertainty of the game. No player dared to predict the winning team of each game because in the game, the losing team can suddenly win by using great plan or perfect character build. Also, this game is unproductive. All the players can take in this game will be the joy of winning or the depression of losing the game. There is no money nor property exchange between players.

That was a cool relationship you formed between play and the game League of Legend. Although I never played the game, I do understand how you are tying the characteristics of play to the idea that there is no money nor property exchange between players in League of Legend as so in play.
