Should video games be art?

In my opinion, I believe video games should be viewed as art. The game design and coding are both connected to the world of art. It’s the creation of something that starts with imagination…signing, rapping, dancing are all considered art so why can’t video gaming be?

Creative graphics, storytelling and, sound effects are all forms of art that practically make up a video game. But because video gaming is fairly new (the 1980s) society overlooks it as art because it’s not traditional.  The medium of video games should be considered as high-art and, should be viewed with the same critics as any other forms of art. Technology is advancing at a rapid pace and, the medium will change along with public perception as time go on.

I defiantly agree although this critique is from some one who is disconnected from the gaming world, like you i think games should be considered art for the very fact of the worlds they give us to escape in just as a peace of art in a museum or our favorite song that lets us escape reality. Also games are now inspiring art and have become a part of that medium with multiple forms of game art, so its defiantly an art I just think it will take time for it to be accepted just as it did with film and music.

It is definitely not a traditional style of art, but I would agree. I don’t know much about coding, but I know that there are different ways to code for the same end result. I think this fact alone constitutes video games to be considered art, much less all the other forms of art that go into creating a video games.

I agree with your view. I think video games can be broken down in different elements. You can look at video games from different points of view, which is what makes it such a unique art form. I think looking at video games from a design perspective, you can easily see all the creative work that went into the creation of the game.

It was so interesting to see the functions at the end of your writing. Your approach was definitely seized my attention. Also, it was good to see many questioning sentences between your essay. I also questioned myself a lot of times while I read your essay about Juul’s ‘Art of Failure’. Great points and your deep personal thought about Juul’s ‘Art of Failure’ was well organized through your essay. Thank you for writing this essay.
