Art of failure

The art of failure describes why it is significant to fail in video games because it allows you to thoroughly feel the emotions of the character your playing. The player usually feels the same loss they imagine their virtual character to be facing. This is interesting to me because it gives you the oppurtunity to make it up to yourself by continuing to play until you reach satisfactory with your achievements. The failure in reality can make you feel as if you let yourself and the person your controlling down. Juul talks about the separation between you and the fictional character that you play but you will also feel sadness about your character failing in your control. The control you have over your character makes you feel a sense of responsibility. Their well being is in your hands and if you fail and it can motivate you to consistently play until you know you can win because it gives satisfaction to the user to know that their gameplay character can depend on their skills. The problems that come from familiar sparks an addiction in the player to invest their time into overcoming this obstacle. The attachment to your character that Juul discusses is you’re ambition to prove yourself both in the virtual world and in reality. I liked the reading and I thought it was important to highlight on the failing in video games and the impact it has to make you continue to keep going. Games that are difficult are usually held with high regard because of the way it keeps you interested and constantly wanting to become better at it. Your cognitive ability gets better as you continue to play a game that you fail at multiple times. Eventually you get to the point where it’s harder for you to fail.

I completely agree with you when you say you thought it was important to highlight the failing aspect of the reading. Because it is one of the main points revolves around this reading. Failure has so many different ins and outs it’s so intriguing to read more about how scholars analyze failure in games. The more challenging the game the harder it is for the player, but the better the end result after failure numerous times. I also agree with you that it becomes a time where you’ve failed so many times, now it’s hard to fail.

You make some good points. The fact that your character’s fate is in your hands and is dependent on your skill at gameplay definitely pushes you to perform better and not keep failing for the sake of your confidence and the well being of your character. You are also right when you say that failing ‘gives you the opportunity to make it up to yourself by continuing to play until you reach satisfactory with your achievements.” The way the game pulls you in and makes you keep playing to make fewer and fewer mistakes each time is part of the beauty in the “art of failure.”

Your essay about Art of failure makes me easy to understand of the concept of the Art of failure. I liked your points that failure could make a positive outcome for the players. I also agree that failure could lead to a better outcome because I’ve experienced while I played the League of Legends. When I lost the game, I’ve always downloaded my play from the game and watch my mistake until I didn’t do the mistake.
