Video games are not Art

Robert Elbert believes that video games can never be art. I disagree with this because he isn’t considering all games. Santiago says art has to be deliberately making you feel certain emotions and expressions and she believes video games can accomplish them. I feel like you can guide them with the narrative that you’re trying to create. If you create a painting trying to deliberately make someone interpret it in that way it doesn’t guarantee that there is a gonna be that exact reaction and it can be interpreted differently. He states that they need to be arranged specifically to be called art but I agree with this as well. Video games are arranged specifically. They are designed to evoke certain emotions. If it is a horror game then they will try to arrange it in a way to play with your emotions and evoke fear in you. The ability to design something that makes you feel is art. Elbert disagrees with this and feels like you shouldn’t categorize it as high as art because of the great works of art that exist. Ebert is basing his assumptions on the idea that this is the peak for video games. Video games are evolving rapidly fast and there design is becoming more and more detailed. The experience of these games puts the user in there own experience of emotions. You can pick and choose what action you want to take in games which makes it a self reflective of the user. The gameplay experience creates art unique to the player. The gameplay experience is the art if you compare this to movies that art is limited to what actions the director wants the main character to take, in paintings you only see what the artist wants you to see but with games they give you a world with rules and allows you to create your story through your experience.

I agree with your take on games being art. I feel like there are several components of art in games. From the graphics to the gameplay, all aspects are art and work together to make the final product.
